To sum it all up into one statement, as we’re usually taught with SMART goals, we create a sentence that’s in the present tense and which includes the elements I detailed above. So the goal would be to: release my self published, 20,000 word BUSINESS VISIBILITY book by the end of July 2016.

Got it? It’s super easy. The importance of making a goal SMART is that it encourages you to get more specific about the details. It also gives you a deadline for completion. I don’t know about you, but deadlines really help me to get things done. Otherwise, projects can just go on forever.

If I hadn’t made it that specific, I could have ended up with a goal such as: Write and release a book this summer.

Now what does that even mean? Creating such a vague goal brings up the following questions:

Am I talking about a business book? A travel book (I also write books about my long distance walking adventures)? A fiction book?

How long will the book be?

Would I have to find an agent, who would then pitch the book to publishers?

Would I be releasing a paperback or an ebook?

When would I release it? June, July, August, maybe early September? Summer runs from mid-June to mid-September in the northern hemisphere. That’s pretty vague.
